I'm running a Pro-Ject Head Box II with my 5g iPod in a dock, which lines out to the amp. I use Ultrasone HFI-700 phones and the sound is really nice. Really, really nice. I forgot my iPod this morning so I put my iPhone in the cradle and was surprised by the quality. I'd like to find some time to do more comparisons but it would be awesome if I could ditch the iPod and just have the iPhone. Once it reaches 80GB, of course.

Hey, have you tried to make a LOD for the iphone? The iphone if docked to an external speaker system such as the Logitech/Bose system still has sound coming out. It might mean that certain pins are interchanged. Anyway, if you finally come out with an iphone LOD, let me know cause I'll be interested in getting one.

thanks for your reply ;)

Will be interested in your modified dock cables when you start manufacturing them. Also For Hifi Application it would be nice to have a cradle type dock, rather than just dock cables, as it would be nice to have the iPhone supported in an upright position.

Further, a wireless remote control would be nice as well, am I asking too much here, hehe?

Thanks Bigs for your compliments and your post, which is the first one !

LOD means Line Out Dock. Dock means this small flat plug we know for now a long time on the iPod and delivers now a full bunch of functionalities, from sync to Audio Line Out.

I tried the line out on the docking station with iPhone and iPod. Sound is good but not that good. I prefer many times to use the dock cables I make myself with special cryogenized pure copper wires. Definitely better in terms of clarity and transparence with Tomahawk amplifier and Shure or Grado earphones. To let you know I plan to sell Line Out Dock cables, with USB plug for charging iPod at the same time you hear to the music. On iPhone I use the jack with amp or not. The sound is actually quite good with an amp. and when you push the volume of the iPhone to the full maximum, but not comparable anyway with iPod 5th gen.

I don't know about the DAC in iPhone, but I would think that it is not far from new iPod Classic.
